We started the FL season with a great night’s bowling at Longhope.
In the round the Badgers started by racing strongly into an early lead. Back came the Squirrels but didn’t quite make it, falling to a 3 – 5 defeat.
On the other mat, the Oaks made a slow start and the steady Wombles swept home to a positive result.
In the second round the Squirrels and Wombles had a real battle, trading shot for shot and reaching the last end all square. In the last end, the ever reckless Wombles tried to force the issue and only succeeded in forcing the jack off the mat. Three shots and the game to the Squirrels.
The unfortunate Oaks ran into the rampaging Badgers who ran out decisive winners.
In the final round of games the Badgers came gunning for the rather apprehensive Wombles. It turned out to be a very tense affair with the scores all square as they entered the final end. With the jack wedged between woods from both teams, the game went to the deserving Badgers, by a whisker.
In the final game, the battered and bruised Oaks came out swinging but the Squirrels were ducking and diving, racing into an early lead. Back came the Oaks, winning 3 of the last 4 ends to draw the game at 7 shots each.
A very enjoyable night of short mat bowls.
At the end of the first round of matches, we had a game conceded after 6 ends, which allowed the evening to move smoothly into the next round with no waiting around.
Playing ‘match play bowls’ without bonus points and shot difference, allows this flexibility and everyone knows the exact state of play, without the need for mathematical calculations!
Many thanks to Longhope Club for hosting the evening.
